The 2026 Oscar nominations have been announced, revealing a landmark year for cinema. Ryan Coogler’s vampire musical The Sinners has shattered Academy Award records by securing 16 nods. Meanwhile, Oliver Laxe’s Spanish film Sirat earned nominations for Best International Film and, significantly, Best Sound.

While headlines focus on major productions, the 2026 Oscar nominations include a historic first. The Sirat sound nomination marks the first time an exclusively female team has been nominated for Best Sound in the awards’ history.

Historic 2026 Oscar Nominations for Spanish Cinema

Oliver Laxe’s Sirat, a Catalan co-production, will compete for Best International Film. Strong contenders include The Secret Agent from Brazil and Sentimental Value from Norway. However, the film’s technical achievement draws particular attention. This nomination highlights the region’s vibrant arts scene, which recently saw the successful Capitol Theatre rescue.

The sound team of Laia Casanovas, Amanda Villavieja, and Yasmina Praderas secured their nomination against blockbusters like F1 and Frankenstein. Laxe described the achievement as a massive feat given their competition’s scale.

“With sacrifice and talent, the small mammals survive the dinosaurs,” Laxe said. He noted the film’s “artisanal” nature, making the recognition more significant. Casanovas added that the nomination felt like “absolute madness”. This achievement coincides with milestones like the first Game of Thrones series with full Catalan dubbing.

Vampires and Epics Lead the 2026 Oscar Nominations

The Sinners sets a new benchmark with 16 nominations. Paul Thomas Anderson’s epic One Battle After Another follows closely with 13 nods. Consequently, the two films will compete directly in 11 categories, including Best Picture and Best Director.

This year’s Best Picture race features ten diverse titles. The list includes Yorgos Lanthimos’s Bugonia, Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein, and Chloé Zhao’s Hamnet. According to a report from Ara, eight nominees have already premiered in Catalonia or are on streaming platforms.

Generational Duels in Acting Categories

The acting categories promise intense competition, particularly for Best Actor. Leonardo DiCaprio, aged 51, is nominated for One Battle After Another. He faces 30-year-old Timothée Chalamet, who portrays Marty Reisman in Marty Supreme. Notably, Chalamet previously defeated DiCaprio at the Golden Globes.

In supporting categories, the casts of Sentimental Value and One Battle After Another secured double nominations. Contenders include Sean Penn, Benicio del Toro, and Elle Fanning. Jacob Elordi is also nominated for his role in Frankenstein. This focus on performance aligns with local arts investments, including plans for the new Focus theatre and arts school.

Ceremony Details for the 2026 Oscars

The 98th Academy Awards ceremony will occur on 15 March 2026. Therefore, the event will determine if Coogler’s record-breaking nomination count leads to a sweep. Alternatively, voters may favour Paul Thomas Anderson’s traditional auteur approach. For more on award ceremonies, visit the official Academy website.
