The unique event, organised to celebrate the metro system’s 100th anniversary, saw participants tackle a 5.2-kilometre out-and-back course between Plaça Universitat and Monumental stations during the early hours when trains weren’t running.

Furthermore, the race raised an impressive €9,000 for the ALS research unit at Hospital del Mar, adding a charitable dimension to the celebration.
Participants expressed overwhelming enthusiasm for the rare opportunity. Oriol Fernández, a TMB employee who secured one of the coveted spots, explained his motivation: “I’m not here to set any records – I came to enjoy the experience of running through the tunnel.” His sentiment was echoed by Elisabet Gràcia, a nurse from Palau de Plegamans who adjusted her work schedule specifically for the event.
The underground course presented unexpected challenges that surprised many runners. Consequently, participants reported significantly higher temperatures inside the tunnels than anticipated, along with unexpected elevation changes that aren’t noticeable when travelling by train. Victor Millán, a physiotherapist from Martorelles, described the unique atmosphere: “The silence of the tunnels, the sensation of limited air, the unexpected slopes… we had to seize this opportunity.”
Meanwhile, the logistical effort required to participate demonstrated remarkable dedication. Daniel Soriano from Girona faced a 100-kilometre drive home after finishing, needing to be ready to teach classes by 9:00 am. The event’s success highlights how Barcelona continues to find innovative ways to celebrate its cultural heritage while creating memorable experiences for residents.
According to El Periódico’s coverage, the carefully limited number of participants ensured normal metro operations wouldn’t be affected.
