Casas shoe store pop-up (Google Maps) has attracted thousands of eager shoppers to Barcelona’s Poblenou district this week, with queues forming daily for discounts of up to 85%.

The temporary outlet at Ciutat de Granada 53 has become the city’s latest retail phenomenon, drawing approximately 3,000 customers on its opening day alone despite being a regular Wednesday.

Casas Shoe Store Strategy Proves Successful

The century-old family business, founded in Terrassa in 1923, has integrated temporary outlets into its core business strategy. Consequently, these pop-up events allow the company to clear stock from previous seasons while attracting new customer demographics. Furthermore, the current Barcelona location represents their second successful venture in the city after a trial run in May proved overwhelmingly popular.

Cristina Casas, marketing manager and fourth-generation family member, explains the strategic thinking behind the pop-ups. “They enable us to move stock from two or three seasons ago,” she notes. “Footwear is difficult to recycle and deteriorates each year, so we need to find an outlet for it.”

Organised Shopping Experience Drives Sales

The temporary space operates with remarkable efficiency, featuring a three-stage system designed to streamline shopping and prevent theft. Customers first browse merchandise arranged on large tables organised by size, with popular brands including Converse, Camper, Hunter and El Naturalista available from just €10 per pair.

Only right shoes are displayed on the main floor; therefore, shoppers must queue at a rear warehouse counter where staff rapidly locate matching left shoes. Additionally, the extended opening hours from 10am to 8pm require more than twenty staff members to manage the constant flow of customers.

The company’s core demographic remains women aged 35-54 with children, who appreciate being able to outfit the entire family in one shopping trip. However, these pop-up events also attract bargain hunters who prioritise quality and value over following the latest fashion trends. This expansion of their customer base demonstrates how Barcelona’s retail landscape continues to evolve with innovative approaches.

Family Legacy Continues to Grow

The current success builds on a remarkable family history that began when founder Joan Casas opened his first shop in Terrassa using 50 pairs of shoes remaining from a failed sports footwear factory. Through wartime challenges and economic fluctuations, subsequent generations have expanded the business across Catalonia and beyond.

Today, Casas operates 46 physical stores throughout Spain, primarily in Catalonia, with different formats including classic Casas stores, urban U-Casas locations, and permanent Casas Outlet shops. The company has also developed its own brands including Camila’s, Eleven and Camelot, manufacturing footwear through external partners while maintaining control over design.

According to recent reports, the company closed 2024 with 430 employees and a turnover of €38 million. Moreover, the business continues to thrive under family leadership, with the fourth generation now involved in management. This sustained success reflects Catalonia’s strong economic performance in the retail sector.
