Barcelona’s iconic Mercat de la Boqueria is set for major renovation after traders overwhelmingly backed the council’s reform plan. In an assembly held on Tuesday, 90% of stallholders voted in favour of the project, which carries an initial budget of €12 million and is expected to be completed by 2027.

The works will overhaul the market’s central area, add new passageways, replace the current roof with fibrocement and create a redesigned entrance at Plaça Gardunya. The aim is to modernise facilities, improve circulation for visitors and provide a more practical working environment for vendors.
La Boqueria, which draws millions of tourists annually while serving as a vital hub for local food culture, has faced increasing pressure to adapt its infrastructure to modern demands. The backing of its merchants, a decisive factor in the approval process, clears the way for work to begin.
The city council has presented the reform as a balance between heritage and innovation, safeguarding the market’s historic character while ensuring it remains functional and competitive in the decades ahead.
