According to sources close to the former mayor speaking to Tot Barcelona, Colau has definitively ruled out running for a fourth consecutive term. Barcelona en Comú will now launch its electoral machinery to find a replacement candidate through primaries scheduled for early 2026.
The party’s recent ethical code update, which establishes a 12-year maximum limit for consecutive elected positions, appeared tailored to Colau’s situation. However, sources confirm the former housing activist will not make the leap regardless. This decision marks a significant turning point for Barcelona’s political landscape after Colau’s three consecutive campaigns.
Search Begins For New Barcelona Mayor Candidate
Barcelona en Comú faces the challenging task of replacing its most recognizable figure. The primaries will require candidates to run in tandems with at least one woman per team, aiming to build what party direction sources describe as “a broad front” for the 2027 elections.
Currently, the only confirmed candidate is communicator and writer Roberto Enríquez, known as Bob Pop, who announced his intention in a Cadena Ser interview. Meanwhile, other prominent party figures potentially considering bids include former deputy mayor Gerardo Pisarello and Culture Minister Ernest Urtasun.
The party hopes to have its winning tandem selected by early 2026. Subsequently, they will work to form a broad left-wing coalition that could involve agreements with other progressive parties or civil society organizations. This political transition occurs against the backdrop of ongoing housing challenges that have defined Barcelona’s political discourse.
Janet Sanz, another foundational figure from the 15-M movement, will also leave the council after 14 years, marking the departure of the last bastion from Colau’s first government. Consequently, the party must elect a new president from its nine remaining councilors to lead the final stretch of the current mandate.
Colau’s political career saw remarkable achievements, including winning the 2015 elections and governing for eight years despite finishing second in both 2019 and 2023. Her decision not to run as Barcelona mayor candidate again opens a new chapter for Barcelona en Comú as they seek fresh leadership while maintaining their progressive platform.
