Aeroméxico has officially resumed its direct flight service between Barcelona-El Prat Airport and Mexico City, effective 27 March, restoring a crucial air link suspended for six years due to the pandemic. This marks Barcelona as the airline’s second Spanish destination after Madrid. The service operates six times weekly, excluding Tuesdays, until 10 January 2027. Aeroméxico uses a modern Boeing 787 Dreamliner for the route. This addition means Barcelona now has two direct connections to Mexico City, with Emirates previously being the sole operator.

Boosting Barcelona’s Global Connectivity

Vanessa Requena, Head of Cabinet at Barcelona Airport, highlighted the route’s historical significance. She stated, “This route has a long history that the pandemic cut short six years ago. Fortunately, today we resume the connection of what we hope will be a long period together.” The reactivation signifies a sustained recovery in air traffic. It aims to strengthen economic, tourist, and cultural ties between Catalonia and Mexico. Giancarlo Mulinelli, Senior Vice President of Global Sales at Aeroméxico, expressed pride in the restoration. He said, “We are proud to re-establish this route, which demonstrates our commitment to connecting Mexico with the world.”

The airline’s return addresses a significant latent demand. Mexico consistently ranks as a high-potential long-haul market for Barcelona. This includes both leisure travellers and corporate commuters. Mr Mulinelli noted the strong initial performance. He shared, “We are starting very well. The plane arrives and leaves with 100% occupancy.” He also expressed optimism for future success. He added that he expects this step to be “the beginning of many more successes.”

Strategic Importance for Trade and Tourism

The link between Barcelona and Mexico City extends beyond tourism. Mexico City ranks among the principal destinations for air exports from Barcelona. It also serves as one of the main origins for imports. This occurs within a context of intense commercial flows. Furthermore, a significant Mexican community resides in Catalonia. Strong existing business ties also underpin this relationship.

Institutional bodies enthusiastically received the route’s reactivation. This operation forms part of the Strategic Plan 2024-2025. The Barcelona Air Route Development Committee (CDRA) oversees this plan. Aena, the Generalitat de Catalunya, the Ajuntament de Barcelona, and the Cambra de Comerç integrate the CDRA. They collectively work to expand the airport’s international connectivity.

Enhanced Passenger Experience and Network Access

Representatives from institutions and the airline emphasised the link’s strategic value during the inaugural event. Mr Mulinelli underlined that the route connects “two destinations with a wide cultural and tourist richness.” It also reinforces the company’s global network. The CDRA also stressed that this connection meets real business and tourist demand.

Operationally, the Boeing 787 Dreamliner reinforces a commitment to more efficient and comfortable aviation. The aircraft features a Premier cabin with lie-flat seats. It also offers individual entertainment systems and high-speed Wi-Fi. These amenities enhance the passenger experience on long-haul flights. Additionally, the route provides travellers departing from Barcelona access to Aeroméxico’s domestic network. This network includes connections to over 50 destinations across Mexico. Popular locations include Cancún, Los Cabos, Oaxaca, Mérida, and Puerto Vallarta. This consolidates Mexico City as a crucial distribution hub for the rest of the country.

The resumption of this direct flight service significantly enhances Barcelona’s global reach. It strengthens its position as a key European gateway. This development promises to foster deeper economic and cultural exchanges. It will benefit both residents and businesses in Catalonia. The CDRA continues its efforts to secure further international routes. This ensures Barcelona-El Prat Airport remains a vital hub for global travel and commerce.
