Agents Rurals intercepted an individual placing poisoned bait in an agricultural area of Sant Martí d'Albars, Barcelona province. This arrest follows an investigation started in early 2025 after a dead vulture was found in a local stream.
Investigation Uncovers Dead Birds
Following the initial discovery, agents deployed various investigative and surveillance actions. These efforts led to the location and collection of nine dead animals as evidence. The deceased birds included six crows and three common vultures. Agents Rurals confirmed this in a statement on Monday.
Repeat Offender Faces Charges
The individual faces charges for a presumed crime against fauna. This includes using poisons for hunting and causing the death of protected species. Notably, the person caught had a previous criminal conviction in 2011. Agents Rurals investigated similar incidents at that time.
Crimes against fauna carry significant penalties in Spain. These include prison sentences of six months to two years. Fines range from 8 to 24 months. Additionally, offenders face disqualification from professional activities and hunting for two to four years.
Protecting Catalan Wildlife
Sant Martí d'Albars is a small municipality in the Osona comarca. It is located in the north of Barcelona province. The area is known for its rural landscape and natural environment. The presence of vultures indicates a healthy ecosystem, which these actions threaten. Agents Rurals have presented their findings to the Environmental and Urban Planning Prosecutor's Office. The legal process will now proceed, aiming to ensure accountability for wildlife protection.
