The Aldi Barcelona expansion has reinforced its presence in Catalonia with a new supermarket opening in one of Barcelona’s most historic community hubs. The German retailer has inaugurated a 1,200-square-metre store within the Mercado de Montserrat in the Nou Barris district. This move marks a significant step in the latest phase of its national growth strategy.
The new establishment opened its doors on Wednesday, 28 January. Located at the intersection of Carrer de Aiguablava and Via Favència, it employs nearly 20 staff members. Therefore, it now serves the residents of the Roquetes neighbourhood, a key area for local commerce.

Aldi Barcelona Expansion Revitalises Historic Location
The opening comes with a unique timing nuance. The supermarket has launched ahead of the market itself. The Mercado de Montserrat is an iconic facility dating back to 1960. It is currently undergoing extensive restoration work. While the market stalls are scheduled to reopen in March, Aldi has commenced operations early. Consequently, this brings immediate retail activity back to the site.
The Mercado de Montserrat holds deep significance for the district. With over 65 years of history, it has faced challenges in recent years. Meanwhile, the number of active stalls dropped from 80 to approximately 17. The arrival of a major anchor tenant like Aldi is expected to drive footfall. In addition, it should contribute to the revitalisation of the commercial complex.
Aldi Barcelona Expansion Strategy Continues
This latest opening underscores the importance of the region to the retailer’s portfolio. With this addition, Aldi now operates 109 establishments across Catalonia. The province of Barcelona alone hosts 77 of these stores. Furthermore, 26 are located within the capital city itself. This concentration accounts for nearly one-fifth of the company’s total premises in Spain.
The Barcelona launch coincides with another recent opening in S’Arenal, Mallorca. This signals a brisk start to the company’s 2026 roadmap.
National Growth Targets for 2026
Aldi’s strategy for 2026 is ambitious. The company plans to open 40 new supermarkets throughout the year. These additions will push the chain past the milestone of 500 stores nationwide. Since its entry into the Spanish market in 2002, the company has steadily increased its footprint. As a result, it has established itself as a key player in the competitive grocery sector.
According to data from consultancy firm NIQ, Aldi held a 1.8% market share in Spain in 2025. This ranks the company eighth in the sector. However, this represents an increase from the previous financial year. The growth is driven largely by its aggressive expansion policy and focus on accessibility.
