Additionally, a second store will open in early 2026 at the Montserrat market in Les Roquetes neighbourhood.
Aldi Expansion Strategy Targets Strategic Growth
Company representatives describe Catalonia as one of their “strategic territories in Spain,” with Barcelona province already hosting approximately 80 Aldi stores. Furthermore, this represents the highest concentration of Aldi supermarkets anywhere in the country. Xavier Martínez, Aldi’s expansion manager for the region, confirms the company’s commitment to local growth. “This confirms we’re on the right track and that people in the area trust us,” he stated in comments to El Periódico.
The retail expansion extends beyond Barcelona city limits, with another store planned for Pallejà in Baix Llobregat on December 10th. Consequently, these openings will bring Aldi’s Catalan presence to approximately 110 locations, contributing to their nationwide total of 480 stores. This significant Aldi expansion reflects the chain’s confidence in the local market’s potential.
Meanwhile, the company emphasises its regional economic impact through employment and local sourcing. Aldi currently employs over 1,400 people in Catalonia and works extensively with local suppliers. Remarkably, one in five of their Spanish suppliers originates from the Catalan region, strengthening local business networks.
Seasonal Strategy Coincides With Christmas Campaign
The Rosselló store opening strategically aligns with the crucial Christmas shopping period. Therefore, Aldi plans to launch over 550 games and toys across its price ranges, with 70% priced at €9.99 or less. Last year’s equivalent collection saw remarkable success, selling over 100,000 units within just one hour according to company data.
Additionally, the supermarket chain will feature approximately 150 gourmet products from its ‘Special’ range during the festive season. This selection includes around 50 new items specifically designed for holiday hosting. Traditional favourites like pâtés, cheeses, seafood, and prepared dishes will be available alongside gourmet desserts such as lava cakes and tiramisu.
This latest Aldi expansion follows recent openings in Sardenya street, Fort Pienc market, and L’Hospitalet de Llobregat. The consistent growth demonstrates the discount retailer’s successful penetration of Barcelona’s competitive supermarket sector. Moreover, it provides residents with increased shopping options during a period of economic uncertainty affecting many households.
The ongoing Aldi expansion represents a significant development in Barcelona’s retail landscape, offering consumers more choice and competitive pricing. As the chain continues to identify strategic locations throughout the metropolitan area, local shoppers stand to benefit from increased accessibility to discount groceries and seasonal offerings.
