The German discount chain launched its new 1,000-square-metre supermarket this Wednesday, offering special promotions and gift bags to celebrate the inaugural day.

According to official documents, Barcelona City Council authorised the unusual transition between two major supermarket competitors.

Aldi Fort Pienc Expansion Strategy

The Fort Pienc location represents Aldi’s strategic push into Barcelona’s municipal market network. Furthermore, this marks the chain’s third presence in public market facilities following their December 2024 opening in Poblenou and their successful bid for the future Montserrat market in March 2024. Consequently, the German retailer continues to strengthen its footprint across the Catalan capital.

The new Aldi Fort Pienc supermarket will operate from 9:00 to 21:30 Monday through Saturday with a team of 18 staff members. Meanwhile, the opening coincides strategically with Aldi’s popular low-cost Christmas toy campaign launch, featuring over 500 products mostly priced under €10.

Barcelona’s municipal markets authority confirmed that all concession conditions remain unchanged despite the operator switch. “The new concessionaire must meet the same conditions as the previous one,” clarified council sources, “and the transfer requires authorisation from the Municipal Institute of Markets of Barcelona, which verifies all requirements are met.”

This Aldi Fort Pienc development reflects the chain’s broader expansion across Catalonia, where it now operates approximately 100 stores with a quarter located in Barcelona province. Since 2021, the company has opened around thirty new supermarkets in the region while doubling its workforce through nearly 500 additional hires.
