The Alfons XIII Avenue renovation in Badalona has now commenced. Badalona City Council has announced significant works targeting the stretch between Carrer de Juan Valera and Carrer de Bogatell. Consequently, this project aims to completely overhaul the thoroughfare. Therefore, it will transform it from a traffic-heavy road into a greener, more accessible civic axis.

Mayor Xavier Garcia Albiol highlighted the importance of the intervention. He stated, “We are facing works that will completely transform the image of the avenue, putting an end to deterioration resulting from years of neglect.”

Alfons XIII Avenue Renovation: Scope and Funding

This initiative falls under the ‘Impuls Besòs‘ Integrated Action Plan, promoted by the Barcelona Metropolitan Area (AMB). The project has secured funding of approximately €6 million from the European Regional Development Fund (FEDER).

The Badalona works are part of the plan’s ‘historical’ axis. This axis is designed to improve the old N-II route. In addition, it includes upgrades to Avinguda de Pi i Margall in neighbouring Sant Adrià. Moreover, it continues naturally into Badalona along Alfons XIII Avenue.

Alfons XIII Avenue Renovation: Phased Construction Timeline

To minimise disruption to local residents, the council has scheduled the construction in three distinct phases. The total period will be approximately 11 and a half months.

  • Phase 1 (6 months): The section between Avinguda de Juan Valera and Avinguda del Maresme.
  • Phase 2 (4 months): The section between Avinguda del Maresme and the Carretera de Santa Coloma.
  • Phase 3 (1.5 months): The final stretch between Carretera de Santa Coloma and Carrer del Bogatell.

Traffic Disruptions During the Renovation

Traffic restrictions will begin immediately. From 5:00 am on Wednesday, 11 February, vehicle access will be prohibited in the first work zone. This zone is between Carrer de Juan Valera and Avinguda del Maresme. Access will be strictly limited to residents with private parking, service vehicles, and authorised delivery vehicles for local businesses.

A New Urban Design for Alfons XIII Avenue

The Alfons XIII Avenue renovation covers an area of more than 23,500 square metres. It involves a substantial redesign of the streetscape. The current four lanes dedicated to vehicle traffic will be reduced to two. This reduction allows for significantly widened pavements. Furthermore, it enables the introduction of a new bi-directional bicycle lane.

According to the municipal government, these changes are intended to facilitate better connections with Sant Adrià de Besòs and Barcelona. Meanwhile, they will reinforce the avenue’s role as a metropolitan connector. This is similar to Barcelona’s ongoing seafront transformation.

Environmental improvements are also a priority. The plans include planting new trees and shrubbery. Additionally, they involve enlarging tree pits to aid rainwater infiltration and creating designated seating areas. The council has assured residents that existing high-value trees will be preserved. For example, the plane trees and the olive tree at the Maresme Avenue junction will remain.

Additional infrastructure upgrades include the reorganisation of pedestrian crossings and bus stops. This will improve safety, particularly at the complex intersection with Avinguda del Maresme. The project also entails a complete renewal of the street lighting system. It will use efficient LED technology. Finally, a deep renovation of the sewerage network will address significant current deficiencies.
