The AMBici bike service has concluded 2025 with record-breaking figures, registering more than two million journeys throughout the year. As the service marks its third anniversary this week, data released by the Àrea Metropolitana de Barcelona (AMB) reveals a significant surge in both subscribers and daily usage. That debate has been building for months — we covered it in TramBesòs ridership surged over 30% in 2025.
Record growth for the AMBici bike service
Owned by the AMB and managed by Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona (TMB), the AMBici bike service has solidified its position within the region’s transport network. The two million trips recorded in 2025 represent a 27% increase compared to 2024, when 1.6 million journeys were logged. On average, the system now facilitates nearly 6,000 trips daily. That debate has been building for months — we covered it in Barcelona metro fraud dropped significantly while ridership surged.

Since its launch in January 2023, the AMBici bike service has managed a cumulative total of 5.3 million displacements. The user base has also seen a sharp rise, growing by 45% in the last year alone. That debate has been building for months — we covered it in Barcelona’s pedestrian-first ‘Superblocks’ model.
Carlos Cordón, the AMB’s Vice President of Mobility, Transport and Sustainability, welcomed the figures. “We celebrate this data, which reflects that the bicycle continues to gain followers as a regular means of transport,” he stated. He noted that the AMBici bike service plays a key role in advancing towards a healthier, more connected metropolis.
Integration and expansion of the AMBici bike service
The year 2025 also saw a strengthening of the integrated transport network. Active annual subscriptions rose to 23,809, up from 16,388 the previous year. Notably, over 3,300 of these are for the combined metropolitan pass (AMBici + Bicing). This figure has nearly doubled since 2024, highlighting the increasing interoperability of public mobility services.
Infrastructure growth has kept pace with demand. The AMBici bike service network has expanded to 232 stations and 2,552 electric bicycles, providing greater coverage across the 15 active municipalities. Cordón emphasised that this expansion has been crucial for offering an efficient alternative to private vehicles for short and medium-distance trips.
Operational improvements to the AMBici bike service
Responding to user demand, the AMB implemented significant operational changes in 2025. Since 1 August, operating hours were extended. The AMBici bike service now runs from 05:00 to 02:00 daily, year-round.
Additionally, a new flexible pass for one to three days was introduced in July to cater to occasional users and visitors. This initiative has proven successful, with nearly 6,000 such passes purchased since its inception.
Future plans for the AMBici bike service in 2026
Looking ahead, the AMB plans to continue enhancing the AMBici bike service throughout 2026. Immediate plans include the installation of four new stations—three in Badalona and one in Esplugues de Llobregat—along with the addition of 44 electric bicycles.
A participatory process is also scheduled to define the locations for a further 14 stations and 154 additional bicycles later in the year. In total, 2026 is expected to see the addition of 18 stations and 198 bikes.
Furthermore, the AMB intends to leverage technology to improve safety and infrastructure planning. The organisation will begin processing GPS data from the bicycles to analyse routes and usage patterns. This intelligence will guide future investments in cycling networks and improve road safety across the metropolitan area.
