When Blake Robert stepped off a plane at Barcelona-El Prat, he had nothing in his pocket but a guitar strapped to his back. The 23-year-old American content creator had set himself a peculiar challenge: to spend ten days travelling across Spain without a single euro, relying entirely on his music to eat, sleep and move from place to place.

The idea, chronicled on his TikTok account, is part social experiment, part survival exercise. Yet his journey nearly stalled at the first hurdle. On arrival he discovered the train to the city centre cost just over €5, money he did not have. Hoping to busk for the fare, he asked a member of staff at the airport if he could perform there. Security quickly intervened, offering him alternative advice instead: forget the money and take the No. 46 bus, free of charge.

Once in the city, Robert made his way to the Arc de Triomf, a well-trodden stage for buskers and street performers. There, a group of Italian tourists encouraged him to play one of his own songs. His impromptu set drew enough attention to secure him a modest haul. By the end of the day he had collected €32, enough to buy tacos, book a hostel bed and save a little towards the following day’s expenses.

Robert’s experiment reflects both the precariousness and creativity of life on the road. It also highlights Barcelona’s vibrant busking culture, where tourists and locals alike provide a lifeline for travelling musicians. Whether he can stretch his chords and charm across ten days without running out of luck remains to be seen.
