For more than a century, the world has known the mastermind behind the Sagrada Família only through static, black-and-white photographs. Now, however, a moving image of the legendary architect has been brought to light.

Art historian Beli Artigas has revealed the first known visual document of Antoni Gaudí in motion. This historic discovery consists of a brief, four-second fragment filmed in Barcelona on 17 June 1922.

Antoni Gaudí Footage: A ‘Surreal’ Discovery

The finding marks a significant moment for architectural historians and admirers of Catalan Modernism. Until now, Gaudí’s physical presence—his gait and his mannerisms—could only be imagined through still photography and written descriptions. Therefore, seeing the architect moving through the streets of Barcelona offers a layer of humanity previously missing from the archival record.

Artigas described the experience of viewing the clip as both “delirious and surreal”. She highlighted the profound emotion of visualising the architect in motion after years spent studying him exclusively through static images.

Antoni Gaudí Footage Captured in 1922

The footage was captured just four years before Gaudí’s death in 1926. While the clip is fleeting, it provides a rare window into the 1920s Barcelona that Gaudí helped shape. In addition, the discovery adds a tangible dimension to the legacy of a man whose work defines the city’s skyline. His personal life remained famously private. This discovery further enhances Barcelona’s current role as UNESCO World Capital of Architecture.
