Therefore, speculation exists about the works’ nature. They could involve cosmetic internal upgrades not requiring major planning permission. Alternatively, they might link to broader structural renovations of the host building.
Apple Passeig de Gràcia closure: a history of upgrades
This is not the first Apple Passeig de Gràcia closure for refurbishment. In 2019, the location closed for four months for significant remodelling. That move coincided with a Huawei competitor store opening nearby in Plaça de Catalunya.
The store originally opened on 28 July 2012. It serves as Apple’s flagship location in Barcelona. Situated on the ground floor of the former Banco Español de Crédito building, it launched with 300 employees. Architect Eusebi Bona designed the mid-20th century building. At the time, it was the largest Apple sales centre in Southern Europe.
For customers needing in-person support during the closure, Apple’s La Maquinista shopping centre location remains open. That store opened in September 2010. Importantly, it holds the distinction of being Apple’s first physical establishment in Spain.
