Arctic cold front conditions are set to dramatically transform Barcelona’s weather this week, bringing an abrupt end to the recent Indian summer.
According to meteorological reports, temperatures will plummet by 5-10 degrees below seasonal averages, creating winter-like conditions more than a month before winter officially begins.
The Spanish Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has issued warnings about this significant weather shift.

Consequently, residents should prepare for a rapid transition from recent warm conditions to full winter cold. Furthermore, the change will affect not just Barcelona but much of Europe experiencing this Arctic intrusion.
Arctic cold front brings dramatic temperature drop
Temperatures will begin their sharp descent on Tuesday, with both daytime and nighttime readings falling significantly. Morning frost will become widespread across the Pyrenees and Pre-Pyrenees regions. Additionally, maximum temperatures will struggle to reach 12-17°C, with even lower values in mountainous areas.

The mercury will continue dropping through Wednesday, reaching its lowest point on Thursday and Friday. During this period, many areas will experience maximum temperatures of just 5-10°C. Meanwhile, nighttime frost will expand across interior regions, with some high Pyrenean areas potentially reaching -15°C.
This weather pattern follows other recent extreme conditions in the region, including the Barcelona windstorm that sparked 329 emergency calls in October. The rapid change illustrates the increasing volatility in regional weather patterns.
To illustrate the dramatic shift, temperatures at 5,500 meters altitude will plummet from around -12°C to below -34°C by Friday morning. Similarly, at 1,500 meters, readings will drop from nearly 10°C to -3 or -4°C averages. These reference values demonstrate the abrupt temperature collapse occurring within days.
Saturday will remain very cold, particularly during morning hours. However, maximum temperatures will begin a slight recovery. The Arctic air mass will start retreating definitively from Sunday onward, allowing thermometers to gradually normalize toward seasonal averages.
The incoming cold air will be predominantly dry across most of Catalonia. Nevertheless, some precipitation is expected, with snow levels dropping dramatically. From Wednesday afternoon or evening, initial showers will reach Vall d’Aran and northern Pallars Sobirà, with snow levels falling from 1,300 to 1,000 meters.
A front crossing on Thursday will bring snowfall to the northern face of the Pyrenees. This snowfall may intermittently reach southern slopes. Moreover, irregular showers are expected in Girona and Barcelona regions. Snow levels will continue descending throughout the day, potentially reaching 500-600 meters by afternoon or evening.
Therefore, snow could be visible in areas like Montseny, the Transversal range, Pre-Pyrenees and other pre-coastal mountains. However, current maps suggest any snow falling outside the Pyrenees will be relatively insignificant. Conversely, the snowfall could deposit more than 20-25 centimeters in high Alt Pirineu areas over coming days.
The Balearic Islands will also experience showers and strong storms between Thursday and Friday, with possible snowfall in Mallorca’s Serra de Tramuntana. Strong northerly winds will blow across extremities, while the weekend should bring calmer, sunnier conditions as the Arctic cold front finally retreats from the region.
