B-23 bus lane commuters are reporting significant time savings of up to ten minutes during peak hours.

According to a new evaluation by the Public Transport Promotion association (PTP), the dedicated lane, operational for four months, is successfully cutting journey times for buses entering the city from the west.

The PTP states these results show the project is meeting its core objectives. Consequently, the time savings are expected to soon be reflected in official operator reports on commercial speeds, regularity, and punctuality.

B-23 Bus Lane Benefits Extend Across Multiple Municipalities

The benefits of the B-23 bus lane are most evident for nearby towns like Sant Joan Despí, Sant Just Desvern, and Sant Feliu de Llobregat. However, the improvements extend much further. Additionally, users from approximately 15 towns in the Anoia, Bages, and Penedès regions now enjoy notably better travel times to Barcelona.

This offers a more reliable and attractive public transport service for a wide catchment area. The lane is part of a broader push for sustainable mobility in the region, similar to other initiatives like the recent European Mobility Week promotions.

Nevertheless, the transport association has identified a key bottleneck. The issue arises where the new bus lane ends on Avinguda Diagonal. Here, buses must switch from the left to the right-hand lane to continue on the existing city entry lane.

According to the PTP, the current traffic light regulation at this point disadvantages buses, especially when more than two arrive simultaneously. This can cause stops that cost at least one to two minutes of travel time.

Therefore, the association is calling for immediate measures. They are requesting better traffic light priority for buses and the implementation of enforcement mechanisms, such as cameras and direct fines, to prevent unauthorized vehicles from using the exclusive lane.

For the long term, the PTP’s vision is more ambitious. They advocate for a continuous, uninterrupted bus lane extending all the way to Francesc Macià. This corridor would utilise GPS control and real-time traffic regulation.

Ultimately, the goal is to establish a dedicated intercity bus station at Francesc Macià for this route. The PTP emphasises that prioritising the bus is essential for all administrations within the sustainable mobility strategy. This focus on improving core transport links is crucial as the city manages growth, a topic also explored in discussions about accommodation for major events.

The positive data on the B-23 bus lane demonstrates how targeted infrastructure investment can deliver tangible benefits for public transport users. As the PTP’s evaluation confirms, this project is making commutes faster and more reliable for thousands entering Barcelona daily.
