Badalona B9 demolition has commenced just one day after authorities cleared the largest migrant settlement in Catalonia.

The former school building, which housed hundreds of people, is now being prepared for destruction to make way for a new Urban Guard police station.

Badalona B9 Demolition Timeline and Plans

Municipal workers entered the site on Thursday morning to begin cleaning operations. They are removing rubbish and potentially dangerous objects from the abandoned premises. According to Mayor Xavier Garcia Albiol, these preparatory tasks will continue for two to three days.

The full demolition will follow, involving the removal of roofs and all remaining structures. The contract for this work has been awarded to Hercal Diggers, S.L. for €306,789.73. Consequently, the complete levelling of the site could begin as early as January.

Meanwhile, approximately fifty evicted individuals spent Wednesday night outside the sealed building. They shared meals around fires, having no immediate housing alternatives. Municipal sources indicate the situation has reduced from 400 occupants to about forty people in a nearby square.

Community Response and Security Measures

The local neighbourhood association in Remei, where the B9 is located, has expressed mixed feelings. While lamenting the plight of those evicted, residents have also long requested “more security, more cleanliness and a police station” for their area. This reflects broader concerns about public safety challenges in the region.

Immediately after the eviction, workers welded shut the building’s entrances to prevent reoccupation. Furthermore, the council has hired a private security company to guard the site continuously. Urban Guard officers maintained a presence at the doors throughout the night.

Municipal authorities state they are attempting to convince those remaining in the square that they cannot stay there. They anticipate the situation will “normalise in the coming days,” though specific plans for the displaced individuals have not been detailed.

The original plan involved a station shared with the Mossos d’Esquadra, but this concept has faded over time. The current focus remains squarely on establishing a dedicated Urban Guard facility. According to El Periódico, this development marks a significant shift in the use of the prominent Badalona site.
