Badalona Christmas tree celebrations officially launched this weekend as the city illuminated its spectacular 43-metre festive centrepiece.

The monumental installation in Plaça del President Tarradellas features over 100,000 LED lights and attracted thousands of residents despite the chilly November evening, marking the beginning of the city’s extended holiday programme.

The lighting ceremony on Saturday 22nd November transformed the square into one of the metropolitan area’s busiest festive hubs.

Furthermore, municipal authorities had anticipated approximately 50,000 attendees, matching last year’s successful turnout. Consequently, from early afternoon, locals and visitors gradually filled the plaza to capacity, creating an electric atmosphere ahead of the main event.

The evening’s entertainment programme warmed up the crowd with dance school choreographies, live performances and interactive activities. Additionally, the central spectacle ‘Tocant les Estrelles del Cel de Badalona’ combined contemporary circus, live music and aerial dance in an immersive format that captivated the entire square. Meanwhile, the city’s cultural calendar continues to flourish with such large-scale productions.

As darkness fell, Mayor Xavier García Albiol took to the stage accompanied by municipal government members. After thanking attendees for braving the cold weather, he led a collective countdown before pressing the button that ignited the tree. The moment triggered a coordinated light and sound show that will run throughout the holiday season.

The transitable structure measures 15 metres in diameter and will offer daily light displays. On weekdays, two shows will occur at 6pm and 7pm, while weekends and holidays will feature four performances at 6pm, 7pm, 8pm and 9pm. This impressive Badalona Christmas tree installation demonstrates the city’s commitment to creating shared community experiences during the festive period.

The inauguration also activated Badalona’s broader Christmas programming. This weekend sees the third edition of the Gastronomic Christmas Fair at Rambla del Gorg, featuring twenty decorated stalls, tastings, live music and children’s activities. Moreover, from 6th December to 5th January, the Commercial Christmas Fair arrives at Plaça President Tarradellas with traditional stalls and a large ice rink.

Children’s workshops will run every weekend from Friday to Sunday between 28th November and 4th January, plus additional dates on 8th, 22nd and 23rd December. According to El Periódico Barcelona, the comprehensive programme aims to create numerous opportunities for family participation throughout the holiday season. The city’s vibrant community spirit echoes recent developments seen in Barcelona’s evolving commercial landscape.

This magnificent Badalona Christmas tree now stands as a beacon of festive celebration, inviting residents and visitors alike to enjoy the holiday spirit. The carefully coordinated light shows and accompanying programming ensure the city remains a destination for seasonal enjoyment throughout December and into the new year.
