Badia economic expansion begins next Monday with a landmark €7.1 million project representing the municipality’s first urban growth in its 50-year history.

The development follows more than a decade of planning delays and will transform an 11-hectare plot along the Riu Sec front.

and Badia del Vallès Council. Furthermore, two major supermarkets—Bonpreu-Esclat and Lidl—will generate approximately 100 positions in a municipality currently experiencing the region’s highest unemployment rate at 13.77%.

Both supermarkets are expected to complete construction within approximately one year. Additionally, the development includes a student residence supporting Badia’s strategy to establish itself as a university district linked to UAB. The council is also defining plans for municipal commercial plots to complement existing area offerings.

Addressing Community Needs Through Strategic Development

The expansion specifically addresses Badia’s aging population, where 21.84% of residents are over 65 according to Barcelona Provincial Council data. Consequently, the project includes land offered to the Department of Social Rights for a public elderly care residence—a facility local campaigners have demanded for 25 years.

This urban transformation coincides with another significant change: the liberalisation of all 5,200 protected homes constituting Badia’s entire residential stock. This unique phenomenon in Spain will conclude in 2026, potentially attracting younger residents and strengthening connections to metropolitan and university networks.

The development will modernise infrastructure while significantly increasing municipal revenues, according to council statements. Improved mobility forms another crucial component, with new dual carriageways connecting Mediterranean Avenue to Sabadell’s Ikea area and enhanced links to neighbouring Barberà del Vallès.

Road renovations, lighting, cycle lanes and green spaces complete the comprehensive upgrade. The strategic location near UAB positions Badia as a key regional enclave, marking a new chapter defined by growth, improved services and enhanced metropolitan centrality for this historically public-housing focused community.
