The grim discovery follows a complex investigation that began when the victim was reported missing in July 2024.

Baix Penedès Homicide Investigation Unfolds

The investigation intensified after family members reported the man missing at a police station in Viladecans. Consequently, the Mossos d’Esquadra from El Vendrell initiated inquiries into his unexplained disappearance. The Criminal Investigation Division (DIC) subsequently assumed control of the case due to its suspicious nature. Furthermore, they gathered objective evidence pointing toward third-party involvement and a potential homicide with body concealment.

Authorities identified the two detainees, who were a couple at the time of the alleged crime, as the main suspects. Moreover, police revealed that the arrested woman had previously been in a relationship with the victim until 2022. According to official reports from La Sexta, she had reported him for abuse following their separation.

The judicial process moved forward last Thursday when the suspects appeared before the Court of Instruction 5 in El Vendrell. Following their testimony, the judge ordered the location and recovery of the victim’s body. A specialised team comprising DIC investigators, Scientific Police, the Mobile Brigade, and the Underground Unit was assembled for this critical operation.

Grim Discovery and Judicial Measures

The coordinated police operation successfully located the body inside a septic tank at a property in Sant Jaume de Domenys, within the Baix Penedès region. The victim, who had previously lived at the address, awaits formal identification. This development marks a crucial turning point in the Baix Penedès homicide investigation that has spanned over a year.

The court has since ordered precautionary prison measures for both suspects. The 69-year-old man remains in custody without bail, while the 48-year-old woman has been granted conditional release with bail. The High Court of Justice of Catalonia (TSJC) confirmed these measures, noting the case remains open for homicide. This case follows other serious investigations in the region, including record drug seizures at Barcelona’s port that highlight ongoing law enforcement challenges.

Police continue their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the Baix Penedès homicide. The meticulous work of the Central Missing Persons Unit demonstrates how complex disappearance cases can evolve into major criminal investigations. Meanwhile, the community awaits further developments as authorities work to establish a complete timeline of events leading to this tragic outcome.
