The victim, identified by local sources as Jordi L., was discovered by concerned friends at his home in Vilafruns de Balsareny, a small former mining colony situated between Balsareny and Sallent in the Bages comarca. According to reports from Ara Cat, friends went to check on him at around 8:45 PM and found him deceased on the floor. The entire apartment had been thoroughly ransacked, raising immediate suspicions of a violent robbery.
Emergency services were called to the scene, but paramedics from the Sistema d’Emergències Mèdiques (SEM) could only certify the man’s death. Local police initially raised the alert and, upon seeing the circumstances, immediately contacted the Mossos d’Esquadra, the autonomous police force of Catalonia.
Homicide Unit Takes Over Case
The Mossos’ elite Divisió d’Investigació Criminal (DIC) from the force’s Central Region has taken over the investigation. On Thursday morning, forensic officers were meticulously combing the property and surrounding area for evidence to help piece together the victim’s final hours and identify those responsible.
However, while the ransacked state of the home suggests a robbery that escalated tragically, investigators confirm they are keeping all possibilities open. An early police assessment cited by El Caso suggests the man may have been beaten to death. A judge has placed the case under a secrecy order to protect the ongoing investigation’s integrity, and no arrests have yet been made.
This killing marks Catalonia’s eighth homicide this year, and the first in the predominantly rural Central Catalonia region. This fact has amplified the shock within the local community.
A Community in Shock
The violent death has sent ripples of disbelief through Balsareny, a town of just over 3,000 residents where violent crime is a rarity. Jordi was described as a well-known and well-liked lifelong resident of the area. He had lived alone in the small Vilafruns colony, home to only about twenty other people, after previously living there with his parents.
Locals remembered him as an unconflicted man who had worked as a mechanic and a lorry driver. In a testament to his gentle nature, he was also known for taking care of a local cat colony not far from his home. “How can it be that this has happened here?” one resident asked reporters, capturing the profound sense of shock shared by many. The incident stands in stark contrast to the often complex criminal cases seen in larger urban centres, such as the recent murder investigation launched in a L’Hospitalet squat.
As the community grapples with the news, the DIC continues its search for answers, hoping to bring clarity to a crime that has shattered the peace of this small Catalan town.
