Dozens of activists stripped naked and doused themselves in artificial blood in the heart of Barcelona on Sunday. Consequently, they staged a dramatic protest against the fur industry.
Organised by the animal rights group AnimaNaturalis, the demonstration took place at midday in Plaça Catalunya. The protesters piled their bodies together to mimic the lifeless corpses of animals skinned for their pelts. Therefore, they created a stark visual under the slogan ‘For a Fur Free Europe‘.

Activists demand a ban on fur farms
The primary aim of the action was to demand a definitive ban on fur farms across the European Union. Meanwhile, the organisation argues that the practice is cruel and unnecessary. It represents the suffering of animals killed annually for the fashion trade.
Cristina Ibáñez, the campaign manager for AnimaNaturalis, emphasised that the political leadership in Brussels must act. She stated they must respond to both scientific evidence and growing public sentiment against the industry.
“The European Commission must respond to science and to the will of the citizens by definitively prohibiting fur farms throughout the European Union.”Cristina Ibáñez, AnimaNaturalis Campaign Manager
The protest in Barcelona highlights the continuing pressure on EU legislators. They face demands to eliminate the farming of animals specifically for their skins. This practice has already been restricted or banned in several member states. However, it remains legal at a Union level. Such demonstrations occur in parallel with other events. For example, recent farmers’ protests in Catalonia have also taken place.
