Barcelona’s Civil Protection service activated the city’s Municipal Emergency Plan on Sunday afternoon after forecasters warned of potentially intense rainfall that could overwhelm drainage systems. The measure was introduced at alert level as a precautionary step.

City officials urged residents to take safety measures, including checking roofs and gutters, disconnecting electrical devices and keeping hazardous products out of reach of rising water. Drivers were advised to slow down, brake gently, maintain safe distances, and avoid crossing flooded areas.
The plan’s activation reflects concerns that the stormwater system could struggle under sudden downpours, leading to flooding and disruption on the city’s streets. The move is part of a wider effort to prepare the city for increasingly severe weather events linked to climate change.
