Swiss architect Sandy Brunner has urged Barcelona to prioritise affordable housing. She advocates for robust public-private collaboration to address the city's pressing housing crisis.

Prioritising Affordable Housing

Brunner, who founded Studio sbA in Barcelona in 2004, highlighted the urgent need for action. She stated, "Barcelona needs to prioritise affordable housing through public-private collaboration and a more agile administration." She also identified cooperative housing as a promising avenue. This approach could sustainably expand the city's housing supply for its residents. The current housing market presents significant challenges for many, making these solutions critical. Additionally, Brunner stressed the importance of advancing climate-resilient urban planning. She also called for managing tourism with clear, sustainable criteria. This would protect the quality of life for Barcelona's residents.

Architect's Vision for Sustainable Urbanism

Brunner arrived in Barcelona in 2001 after studying at ETH Zurich and Lausanne. Her international studio, Studio sbA, focuses on sustainable and people-centred architecture. In 2011, she established Urbanvisor. This agency offers expert architectural tours, exploring Barcelona's urban evolution. These tours cover innovative city models like superblocks (superilles) and green axes (eixos verds). These initiatives aim to reclaim street space from cars. They create more pedestrian-friendly areas and improve air quality. Brunner chose Barcelona for its unique blend of Mediterranean light, Latin spirit, and Catalan entrepreneurial energy. She later discovered her grandfather also emigrated to Barcelona in the early 20th century. This personal history deepened her connection to the city.

Balancing Growth, Culture, and Quality of Life

Brunner praises Barcelona's balance. It is large enough for daily inspiration, yet small enough to foster a sense of community. She appreciates the city's diverse, well-maintained public spaces. Its mixed-use planning allows residents to live and work within walking distance. The warm Spanish mentality also facilitated her quick integration and friendships. Brunner envisions Barcelona becoming a more sustainable and attractive city. She believes it can be a place where residents thrive. International visitors and newcomers could also fit in respectfully. She suggests careful planning and active community participation are crucial. This could make Barcelona a model for urban living. It would balance growth, culture, and quality of life.
