Mayor Jaume Collboni has unveiled the pioneering Motorcycle Observatory, aiming to cut serious and fatal motorcycle accidents by 30% immediately and halve them within five years.

According to municipal data, motorcycles were involved in nearly half of all serious or fatal accidents recorded in 2024. Specifically, 141 of the 305 severe collisions involved motorcyclists, highlighting the urgent need for targeted safety measures. The comprehensive plan addresses both safety concerns and longstanding issues with pavement parking that have frustrated residents.

Barcelona Motorcycle Safety Plan Expands Infrastructure

The strategy includes creating 24,000 new motorcycle parking spaces during the current administration to address pavement congestion. Furthermore, officials have already cleared 46,500 square metres of pavement space and created 5,000 new parking spots since June 2023. This infrastructure expansion aims to ensure pavements remain dedicated to pedestrians while providing adequate parking for the city’s 270,000 registered motorcycles.

Deputy Mayor Laia Bonet described the initiative as groundbreaking, emphasising its goal to make motorcycles a safe, sustainable and integrated component of urban mobility. “Motorcycles are key for Barcelona residents’ transportation, but they also face significant challenges,” she explained during the announcement.

The observatory will focus on three key areas: safety, public space management, and decarbonisation. Safety improvements will include doubling the number of advanced motorcycle zones in Eixample from 52 to 100. Additionally, the plan involves studying enhanced tunnel markings, improved roundabout curves, and installing energy-absorbing barriers.

Public awareness campaigns will promote safety equipment usage, including airbag vests, while new public funding lines will support fleet renewal for both businesses and private owners. The Barcelona City Council has signed a collaboration agreement with Anesdor, Motoristes per Barcelona and the Traffic Accident Prevention Association, with the working group scheduled to meet quarterly.

This comprehensive approach to urban transport management follows other recent infrastructure improvements across the city, including the successful resumption of full service on Barcelona’s L4 metro line after extensive renovation works. The motorcycle safety initiative represents another significant step in Barcelona’s ongoing efforts to create a safer, more efficient urban transport network for all residents and visitors.
