Barcelona airport expands this weekend with two new air routes connecting the Catalan capital with major Turkish cities.

Turkish low-cost carrier Pegasus Airlines has launched direct flights between Izmir and Barcelona, while newcomer AJet has commenced services between Ankara and Barcelona, significantly boosting connectivity between Spain and Turkey.

Barcelona Airport Expands With Strategic Turkish Connections

Pegasus Airlines inaugurated its Izmir-Barcelona route on Friday 24th October, operating twice weekly with flights departing Izmir at 10:55 on Mondays and Fridays. Return flights from Barcelona depart at 14:30 on the same days. The airline plans to expand this service to include Sunday flights from 7th December, with fares starting from just €55 according to their official announcement.

Meanwhile, AJet has identified Barcelona as a strategic expansion market, becoming the first airline to operate direct flights from Ankara to Spanish cities. The carrier will operate four weekly flights to Barcelona, one more than its Madrid service. Consequently, Barcelona strengthens its position as a key European hub for Turkish aviation.

The new routes arrive as Barcelona continues to enhance its international profile through major events and infrastructure improvements. AJet specifically cited Barcelona’s renowned football clubs and rich cultural heritage as key factors in their expansion decision.

These Turkish routes join other recent aviation developments, including new services by SkyUp to Moldova and Vueling to Morocco and Ljubljana. Therefore, Barcelona’s El Prat Airport continues to rebuild and expand its route network following the pandemic’s impact on global travel.

The additional flights provide more options for both tourism and business travel between the Mediterranean regions. Furthermore, they offer competitive pricing that could stimulate increased travel demand during the winter season.

According to Tot Barcelona’s transport coverage, the new services represent significant progress in reconnecting Barcelona with emerging markets. The expanded connectivity arrives as the city prepares for increased international visitor numbers across multiple sectors.
