Barcelona Airport passenger numbers have reached unprecedented levels, with October recording over 5.2 million travellers through its terminals.
According to data released by airport operator Aena, this represents a significant 5.6% increase compared to the same month last year, marking another milestone in the facility’s post-pandemic recovery.
The figures reveal particularly strong growth in international travel, which saw nearly 4 million passengers – a substantial 6.9% increase year-on-year.

Meanwhile, domestic flights also showed healthy expansion with 1.26 million travellers, representing a 2.2% rise. These impressive statistics come as the airport continues its upward trajectory throughout 2025.
Barcelona Airport Passenger Numbers Show Sustained Growth
From January through October, the airport has welcomed 48.9 million passengers, demonstrating a consistent 4.3% growth compared to the same period in 2024. This sustained performance underscores Barcelona’s position as a key European travel hub and reflects the city’s ongoing appeal to both international visitors and domestic travellers.
The announcement coincides with significant developments in the airport’s expansion plans. Aena’s CEO Maurici Lucena recently confirmed that technical tenders for the Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat Airport expansion master plan will be published “in the coming days.” The comprehensive development strategy carries a budget of €4.5 million for its initial phases.
Furthermore, Lucena described the master plan as a “legal-technical instrument that supports short, medium and long-term developments.” The ambitious project, while having a maximum duration of five years, is expected to be completed within four years, potentially making the expanded airport operational by 2033-2034.
The expansion will include a longer runway capable of handling more transcontinental flights, positioning Barcelona to compete more effectively with other major European hubs. This infrastructure improvement comes at a crucial time as regional authorities seek additional European funding for various development projects.
These record-breaking passenger numbers reflect Barcelona’s robust tourism recovery and its growing importance as a global transportation centre. The city’s appeal continues to draw visitors from around the world, contributing significantly to the local economy and reinforcing its status as a premier European destination.
As Barcelona prepares for major infrastructure upgrades, the consistent growth in Barcelona Airport passenger numbers demonstrates the pressing need for expanded capacity. The airport’s performance throughout 2025 suggests that current facilities will soon reach their limits without the planned improvements.
The expansion project represents a crucial investment in Catalonia’s future connectivity and economic development. With passenger volumes showing no signs of slowing, the timely implementation of the master plan will be essential for maintaining Barcelona’s competitive edge in European aviation.
