Barcelona airport passenger numbers have reached a new historic high, with over 53 million travellers passing through its terminals in the first eleven months of the year.
According to data released by airport operator Aena, the Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat facility handled 53.1 million passengers between January and November, marking a 4.3% increase compared to the same period in 2024.

Furthermore, November alone saw a historic monthly record of 4.2 million passengers, a significant 5.1% rise from November 2024. The surge in passenger traffic is a clear indicator of the city’s enduring appeal and recovering travel sector.

Delving deeper into the statistics reveals a robust recovery across all metrics. Of the total 53 million travellers, 40 million were on international flights, showing a strong 6% year-on-year growth. Domestic passenger numbers also remained solid at 13 million. Consequently, the airport’s operational activity has intensified to accommodate this demand.
The number of flights operated also hit its highest-ever recorded figure. From January to November, there were 333,006 flights, a 3.7% increase. November specifically saw 26,753 operations, up 2.8% from the previous year. This growth in flight frequency is a direct response to the rising passenger demand and expanding route networks.
Cargo operations have experienced an even more dramatic surge. Freight volume for the eleven-month period reached 183,400 tonnes, a substantial 9.9% increase. Moreover, November’s cargo figures jumped by an impressive 21.1% to 18,350 tonnes, highlighting the airport’s growing role as a logistics hub.
Regional Airports Show Strong Growth
The positive trend extends beyond Barcelona’s main airport. Girona-Costa Brava Airport registered 2.13 million passengers in the same period, a 9.5% increase. Its flight operations rose by 16.2% to 26,731. Similarly, Reus Airport in Tarragona saw passenger numbers grow by 13.2% to 1.33 million, with a notable 22.2% spike in November alone.
Sabadell Airport, which primarily handles general aviation, also reported increased activity. It recorded 57,928 operations, a 7.2% rise, with 4,578 passengers for the year. This broader regional growth suggests a healthy and distributed recovery for Catalonia’s air travel infrastructure, which is crucial for managing the overall increase in tourism and business traffic impacting the city’s transport networks.
