Barcelona airport has implemented stringent new access controls, restricting entry to only passengers with valid boarding passes.
According to reports from La Vanguardia, the measures aim to exclude homeless individuals, unauthorised luggage packers, and pickpockets from El Prat’s terminals.

Consequently, airport manager Aena has established checkpoints at metro and train exits, as well as main entrances.
This is not a temporary security exercise. Furthermore, the policy represents a significant shift in managing the airport’s unique ecosystem. A young man offering unofficial luggage wrapping services at Terminal 1 expressed frustration, stating security personnel constantly move him along despite not bothering passengers.

The new rules have received a varied response from different groups. Meanwhile, taxi drivers report they must now present client and flight details to access passenger pickup zones. They note this has reduced the number of unlicensed drivers soliciting business in arrivals areas.
Homeless individuals, however, describe an inconsistent application of the rules. One young man of apparent British origin explained he is sometimes allowed inside but is frequently woken by security, making the exterior preferable. The measures therefore create a complex new dynamic around the terminals.
Security personnel do exercise some discretion. For instance, they generally permit teenagers who claim to want to watch planes, and allow access to Terminal 2 for those stating they need to catch a train. Nonetheless, anyone meeting arriving passengers may be asked for a screenshot of the flight details, particularly if their appearance raises questions.
Aena is firmly exercising its right of admission. Official sources indicate controls are applied based on current needs, and their intermittent nature does not make them provisional. These checks can be random or permanent, decided by Airport Security in coordination with law enforcement. Currently, they are operational at both terminals throughout the day.
This crackdown reflects broader security and order concerns at major transport hubs. The situation at El Prat follows increased police pressure noted in recent months regarding other illicit activities. The airport’s approach highlights the ongoing challenge of balancing public access with security and commercial integrity at a key international gateway.
