Barcelona’s emergency services conducted a major anti-terrorism exercise involving over 250 personnel at a city shopping centre early Wednesday morning. Protecció Civil organised the simulated terrorist attack alongside Mossos d’Esquadra police forces. Emergency Coordination
Mossos d’Esquadra deployed 65 officers from various specialised units during the anti-terrorism exercise. The operation escalated as simulated attackers increased their threat level, requiring additional specialised support. Some mock terrorists were neutralised while others attempted escape, triggering the ‘Gàbia’ vehicle detection protocol. Meanwhile, the Medical Emergency System (SEM) treated thirty simulated casualties using nearly forty healthcare professionals including psychological support teams. The exercise comes as Barcelona police training targets illegal VTC operations in separate security initiatives.

Multi-Agency Response
Advanced Command Centre coordination ensured real-time information sharing with Catalonia’s Operational Coordination Centre throughout the anti-terrorism drill. Urban Guard officers and Red Cross personnel joined the comprehensive emergency response simulation. This multi-agency approach tested Barcelona’s preparedness for complex crisis situations. The training follows recent Catalunya faces strike over Gaza conflict security considerations affecting regional emergency planning.
Authorities will analyse exercise data to identify potential improvements in Barcelona’s emergency response protocols. The full evaluation report is expected within thirty days according to Protecció Civil representatives. Regular security drills remain essential for maintaining Barcelona’s preparedness against evolving threats.
