Diagonal tram connection plans have received crucial initial approval after years of community campaigning, marking a significant step forward for Barcelona’s public transport network.

The Federation of Barcelona Neighbourhood Associations (Favb) has celebrated the decision, describing it as an “essential measure” that will transform connectivity across the city.

Community groups have championed this infrastructure project from its earliest stages. Furthermore, they argue the Diagonal tram connection will dramatically improve daily life for thousands of residents. The federation emphasises that the redevelopment will reduce traffic congestion and pollution while better connecting previously isolated neighbourhoods and municipalities.

According to recent transport developments, the project represents part of Barcelona’s broader mobility strategy. The initial approval came from the Commission for Ecology, Urban Planning, Mobility and Housing, which greenlit both the avenue redevelopment and necessary water collector reforms.

Political support proved decisive, with the government (PSC), Barcelona en Comú and ERC voting in favour. Conversely, Junts, PP and Vox opposed the measures. The Metropolitan Transport Authority had already approved the civil works project in September, paving the way for track extension between Verdaguer and Francesc Macià.

This ambitious Diagonal tram connection project carries an estimated cost of €195 million. The Barcelona City Council will contribute €115 million, while the Generalitat, through the ATM, covers the remaining €80 million for tram infrastructure. Construction is expected to take approximately 40 months, though specific start dates remain unconfirmed.

The completed Diagonal tram connection will feature nearly three kilometres of modified tram platform. The new section will resemble the model avenue recently inaugurated between Marina and Girona streets. Additionally, three new stations will be added: Diagonal | Cinc d’Oros, Balmes and Casanova.

First Deputy Mayor Laia Bonet highlighted the coordinated approval of projects between the ATM and City Council. She stated this approach “will allow a single tender from Verdaguer to Avinguda Sarrià.” Bonet defended the complete Diagonal tram connection as a strategic city project rather than merely a government initiative, aiming for a more sustainable and better-connected Barcelona.

Meanwhile, the Favb continues pushing for further infrastructure developments. They’ve urgently requested continuation of the 2020-2030 Infrastructure Master Plan and the L3 connection between the two Trinitat stations. Community advocates describe this as crucial for ensuring territorial equity across Barcelona’s transport network, similar to recent development projects in neighbouring municipalities.

The approved Diagonal tram connection represents a landmark achievement for community campaigners and urban planners alike. Consequently, Barcelona moves closer to realising its vision of integrated, sustainable public transport serving residents across the metropolitan area.
