Barcelona’s pedestrianisation plan has taken a major step forward with the approval of a €1.98 million project to transform Amílcar Street in Vilapicina.
The Barcelona City Council has given initial approval to reform nearly 3,000 square metres at the intersection of Amílcar, Vilapicina.Fabra i Puig streets.
Pedestrianisation Plan Aims for Urban Improvement District Councillor Xavier Marcé says this intervention forms part of a broader urban improvement strategy for the neighbourhood.
It addresses historical needs of residents that the current municipal government is now unblocking. He also mentioned other planned actions in the area.
The main goal of this pedestrianisation plan is to improve accessibility for pedestrians. The council wants to adjust the street to current regulations and transform the segregated roadway into a single platform. The project also includes environmental and public space comfort improvements.
Planned works include improving the sewer network and burying overhead cables that currently cross the street. Meanwhile, the small square at the intersection of Amílcar and Vilapicina streets will get a new spatial distribution. This should improve mobility at this key point in the neighbourhood.
This pedestrianisation plan arrives as Barcelona continues to address urban living challenges. The city has been grappling with housing affordability, as detailed in recent data showing extreme rental inequality. So improving public spaces in neighbourhoods like Nou Barris represents another facet of creating more liveable communities. The project must still pass through public consultation before final approval.
