The Barcelona City Council has approved the definitive redesign of the Comte Borrell and Parlament streets intersection, marking a significant step forward in the Eixample district’s urban renewal programme.

Furthermore, the new design aims to restore normalcy to neighbourhood life by fundamentally improving the quality of public space. The intervention covers approximately 13,500 square metres and represents an €11.2 million investment in community infrastructure.
According to the approved plans, the new square at the Borrell-Parlament intersection will become a central space for community life. The design incorporates increased greenery, play areas and diverse street furniture to encourage social interaction. Additionally, the project builds on lessons learned from other successful street pacification initiatives across the city.
The transformation follows Barcelona’s ongoing efforts to address urban regeneration challenges while improving quality of life for residents. Meanwhile, the council has emphasised that green space distribution and public space language optimisation represent key improvements over previous temporary measures.
Construction is scheduled to begin during the second quarter of 2026, with an estimated duration of one year. The project will replace the current tactical urbanisation with permanent infrastructure that maintains the single platform approach while significantly enhancing environmental sustainability through improved water management systems.
