Key Details of the Foixarda Rugby Field Renovation
Specific upgrades include installing new goalposts, covering access openings to railings, and protecting the southwest fence. Additionally, two new drainage channels will be created to prevent waterlogging, and the entire pumping and chlorination system will be replaced. The project forms part of a broader €10 million emergency plan to upgrade the city’s sports facilities, agreed with the ERC municipal group.
David Escudé, Councillor for Sports, stated the renovation would “bring a historic Montjuïc installation up to date.” He emphasised the Institut Barcelona Esport’s ongoing work to improve facilities needing renewal to ensure healthy practice for all the city’s clubs. This focus on public infrastructure follows recent discussions about other critical renovation priorities in the city’s budget.
The existing pitch has suffered from technical shortcomings and even cable thefts, issues the renovation directly targets. The new organic turf is specifically chosen to improve playing conditions and meet the technical demands of rugby. Meanwhile, the lateral elements of the field will be modified, and the north-side railing will be extended to enhance safety and accessibility.
According to the official project details, the works will ensure the Foixarda rugby field renovation delivers a facility fit for the future. This investment underscores the city’s commitment to its sporting heritage, much like other recent developments such as the new Lilla Pavilion which doubled local sports capacity.
The approved plan represents a significant step forward for local rugby clubs and the sporting community on Montjuïc. Therefore, the summer 2026 timeline aims to minimise disruption to the sporting calendar while delivering a thoroughly modernised venue. The Foixarda rugby field renovation will ultimately provide a safer, higher-quality environment for athletes of all levels.
