Ciutadella Park pergola restoration plans have received official approval from Barcelona’s city government, marking a significant step forward for the historic structure.
The iconic 1883 building, designed by Josep Fontserè, will undergo comprehensive rehabilitation to restore its original appearance and address years of deterioration. Consequently, this ambitious project forms part of the broader Ciutadella del Coneixement initiative transforming Barcelona’s green lung.

The restoration work will proceed in two distinct phases with a total budget of €2 million. The first phase focuses on the interior structure and will commence during the first quarter of 2026, lasting approximately ten months. Meanwhile, the second phase addressing the four exterior façades is scheduled for 2027 with an estimated five-month duration. During construction periods, the pergola will remain closed to the public for safety reasons.
Originally serving as an events and celebration space during the 1888 Universal Exposition, the pergola later fulfilled its intended purpose as a botanical showcase. The current restoration aims to rehabilitate the roof, façades, structure, flooring and both entrance gates. Furthermore, it will create a new rear access point opening onto Plaça de Fontserè, improving connectivity throughout the park.
The project presents particular challenges regarding the protection of diverse plant species housed within the structure. Accordingly, the Barcelona City Council emphasises that renovations will “improve and enhance” the landscape aspects while preserving the building’s cultural heritage status. Works will include restoring exposed brickwork, improving drainage systems, and carefully managing the vegetation.
This pergola restoration represents the final piece in the comprehensive overhaul of Ciutadella Park’s heritage structures. The broader transformation includes recently completed projects like the greenhouse renovation and Martorell Museum conversion, alongside upcoming works at the Castle of the Three Dragons. Additionally, these improvements complement other city infrastructure developments such as the ongoing metro accessibility upgrades occurring across Barcelona.
Looking ahead, the restored pergola will serve as a scientific dissemination space open to citizens, aligning with the educational focus of the Ciutadella del Coneixement project. This initiative also encompasses the massive science complex at the former Fish Market, the CSIC Bioscience Pole, and the State Library development.
