Barcelona Cycling Network Expansion Targets Completion

The Metropolitan Area of Barcelona (AMB) has allocated €2.38 million specifically for bicycle lane design and construction. Furthermore, an additional €1 million will enhance pedestrian pathways, particularly around public transport access points. Municipal authorities can now access subsidies covering up to 50% of project costs, with maximum grants of €200,000 per council for cycling infrastructure.

Pedestrian improvement projects, meanwhile, qualify for up to €50,000 per municipality. All funded initiatives must complete implementation within 18 months, ensuring rapid progress toward network completion. This represents the fourth funding round dedicated to metropolitan cycling connectivity since the programme began.

Previous allocations in 2016, 2017 and 2021 generated a combined investment of €10.05 million. Consequently, these earlier phases delivered 18, 16 and 14 kilometres of new cycle lanes respectively. The consistent funding demonstrates the metropolitan authority’s commitment to sustainable transport development.

Elisabet Latorre, AMB’s Sustainable Mobility Managing Director, emphasised that this new funding will address remaining gaps in the Bicivia network. She stated the investment will facilitate comfortable and safe bicycle mobility both within municipalities and between different towns across the metropolitan region.

The Bicivia network currently stands at 67% completion, with the full system planned to exceed 550 kilometres when finished. Its core structure comprises nine major axes: four vertical routes running north-south following the Llobregat and Besòs river courses, and five horizontal routes including four coastal paths and one through the Vallès area.
