Barcelona’s Eixample district is set to gain three new public schools after city councillors finally approved a crucial funding agreement.
The €41 million deal, reported by La Vanguardia, unblocks projects that have been stalled for three years.

Consequently, construction can now begin on the Gaia, Entença, and Xirinacs schools.
Eixample Schools Project Details And Locations
The Gaia school will be built in the former umbrella factory on Carrer Dos de Maig, near Glòries. Its budget is €11.5 million, with the regional government contributing €9 million. Meanwhile, the Xirinacs school will occupy a space within the transformed La Model complex. This project carries a €17 million price tag.
Finally, the Entença school will rise on the old fire station site at Provença, 178. This development is part of a larger urban plan linking educational and health facilities near the Hospital Clínic. The city council will advance the initial funds to tender and start the works, with costs later shared with the regional government.
Furthermore, the broad political support for the Eixample schools was notable, with only Vox abstaining. Most groups, however, criticised the lengthy delay in reaching this point. The agreement represents a significant step in strengthening the city’s public education network, addressing a long-standing need for more school places in the densely populated district.
This infrastructure push aligns with other major developments reshaping the city, such as The University of Hong Kong opening its first European campus in Barcelona’s 22@ district. Additionally, the focus on public investment in facilities contrasts with recent controversies over luxury developments, including the demolition of a 900m² luxury chalet in Pedralbes.
The approval of these three new Eixample schools marks a concrete victory for public services in Barcelona’s urban core.
