Barcelona Smart Lighting Expansion Details
The three-year contract includes a potential two-year extension and covers approximately 158,000 lighting points across the city. Furthermore, the agreement maintains protections for the 160 workers currently employed in street lighting maintenance. Consequently, the staffing budget representing 60% of the contract value cannot be reduced during bidding.

Additionally, the new system will incorporate advanced sensor technology to automatically dim lights during quiet hours when streets are empty. This intelligent approach represents a significant step forward in urban energy management. The transition will also accelerate the adoption of white LED lighting, replacing the traditional orange-toned illumination throughout Barcelona.
Currently, 40% of the city’s lighting points feature LED technology, with plans to reach 60% by the end of the current administration. However, complete conversion to LED lighting across all 158,000 points will require approximately two additional terms, projecting full implementation around 2035.
Meanwhile, the remote management system will undergo substantial upgrades with complete telegestion capabilities targeted for 2028. This centralised control will monitor over 2,600 electrical panels distributed throughout Barcelona. Therefore, response times for the approximately 19,000 annual lighting failures should improve significantly, benefiting residents across the city.
