Barcelona beaches have concluded their 2025 season with unprecedented visitor numbers, welcoming 5.3 million people between April and October.

This represents an 18.8% increase compared to 2024, according to municipal data released this week. The record-breaking figures are largely attributed to this year’s early onset of warm weather, with the summer of 2025 ranking as the second warmest in Catalonia’s history.
Barcelona Beaches See Accessibility Services Soar
Health Councillor Marta Villanueva highlighted the season’s major success stories during a press conference on Monday. The accessibility support service for people with reduced mobility recorded 48,563 uses, nearly doubling last year’s figures. Furthermore, the opening of a new service point at Bogatell beach and relocation of services from Sant Miquel to Barceloneta significantly improved user experience.
Users rated the accessibility service 4.7 out of 5, while the dog-friendly area at Llevant beach also gained popularity. This season saw 12,791 dogs and 23,241 people using the designated canine area, with satisfaction ratings averaging 8.15 points. The city’s commitment to inclusive beach access appears to be paying dividends.
Enhanced Safety and Environmental Measures
Urban Guard officers, comprising approximately 80 dedicated agents, issued over 34,000 fines for illegal street vending and confiscated 148,000 beverages. Additionally, they made 276 arrests, primarily for theft-related offences. Meanwhile, lifeguard services conducted 45,034 interventions, most of them preventive, and Barcelona Firefighters carried out 322 maritime operations.
The smoking ban on Barcelona beaches remains “fully consolidated,” with officials reporting “less than 1% of smokers during service hours.” However, cigarette butt litter remains an issue, with authorities collecting 176 discarded electronic cigarettes for the first time this season. Total waste collection reached nearly 600 tonnes, though water-based debris decreased by 40% compared to last year.
Barcelona became Spain’s first city to declare all its beaches smoke-free spaces in 2022, prohibiting smoking both on sand and in water. This year, seven additional municipalities in the province have joined this initiative, expanding the health-focused policy across the region.
Community Services and Education Initiatives
The Purple Points service, dedicated to preventing and addressing gender-based and LGTBI-phobic violence, expanded its nighttime presence this year to Somorrostro and Bogatell beaches. Staff contacted 9,987 people, primarily through awareness campaigns, with the service receiving a 9.15 out of 10 satisfaction rating.
The Beach Centre offered 83 educational activities focused on sustainability and biodiversity, attracting approximately 1,500 participants. Meanwhile, the information service handled 42,740 inquiries from visitors seeking assistance and guidance. The overall satisfaction rating for Barcelona’s beaches remains strong at 7.37 out of 10, indicating continued public appreciation for the city’s coastal amenities.
