Barcelona Bicing electric bikes have become the overwhelming choice for users, accounting for more than 80% of all journeys in the city’s public bicycle system.
This dramatic shift toward electric assistance comes as the service celebrates reaching 100 million trips since its comprehensive renewal in 2019.
The transformation has been remarkable.

Furthermore, electric bicycles now represent 62% of the total fleet, demonstrating the city’s commitment to sustainable urban mobility. Consequently, this evolution has enabled Bicing to expand into eight mountainous neighbourhoods that were previously challenging for mechanical bicycles.
Barcelona Bicing Usage Soars To Record Levels
Recent statistics reveal the system’s growing popularity. According to transport data analysis, September 2025 alone saw 1.9 million Bicing uses, while the annual total reached over 9.1 million journeys by that month. Additionally, the service has registered a 7% increase in users during the first half of 2025.
Each bicycle now travels approximately 4,500 kilometres monthly across Barcelona’s extensive network. Meanwhile, the system has grown from its humble beginnings in 2007 with just 14 stations and 200 bicycles around Ciutadella Park to today’s impressive infrastructure of 557 stations and 8,000 bicycles serving all ten city districts.
The service currently boasts approximately 165,000 subscribers who have embraced Bicing as an integral part of Barcelona’s public transport ecosystem. However, challenges remain regarding vehicle maintenance and the coordination between Barcelona’s Bicing and the metropolitan AMBici system, though interchange stations and combined subscriptions have partially resolved these issues.
This growth in sustainable transport aligns with broader urban development trends. Moreover, as housing developments expand, integrated transport solutions become increasingly vital for connecting communities across the city.
After 18 years of operation, Barcelona Bicing has firmly established itself as a key component of the city’s sustainable mobility future. The clear preference for electric models signals a fundamental shift in how residents navigate urban spaces, prioritising efficiency and accessibility across Barcelona’s varied topography.
