The Barcelona Metropolitan Bike Network is accelerating towards completion with a new €3.38 million investment package approved by the metropolitan authority.

This funding aims to advance the ambitious Bicivia project, which will eventually connect all 36 municipalities in the metropolitan area with over 550 kilometres of dedicated cycling lanes.

The Àrea Metropolitana de Barcelona (AMB) has prioritised sustainable mobility for over a decade. Consequently, this latest funding injection will finance new cycle lanes and improve pedestrian access to public transport hubs.

Barcelona Metropolitan Bike Network Expands Rapidly

The Bicivia network is structured around nine major axes. These include four vertical routes running north-south along the Llobregat and Besòs river valleys. Furthermore, five horizontal axes traverse the coastal area and the Vallès region.

Elisabet Latorre, the AMB’s Sustainable Mobility Delegate, emphasised the project’s goals. “This new call allows us to continue completing pending sections of the Bicivia network,” she explained. “It promotes comfortable and safe cycling, both within and between towns. Connecting major public transport interchanges is also key.”

This initiative complements other major transport projects reshaping the city. For instance, Barcelona’s Diagonal tram link recently moved forward after crucial council approval, highlighting a multi-modal transport strategy.

The investment follows three previous subsidy rounds in 2016, 2017, and 2021. Those earlier phases saw €10 million invested, creating 48 kilometres of new cycle paths. Therefore, the metropolitan bike network is steadily becoming a tangible reality for residents.

Supporting infrastructure is growing alongside the lanes. The AMBici public bike service, funded by EU Next Generation funds, now operates in 15 municipalities. It boasts 2,600 bicycles and has seen registered users grow by 30% this year alone.

Additionally, the Bicibox secure parking service recorded over 382,000 uses in 2024. It offers more than 3,000 parking spaces across the metropolis. This service has become particularly valuable since personal mobility devices were banned from public transport.

The Barcelona Metropolitan Bike Network represents a fundamental shift in urban planning. It aims to make cycling a genuine daily transport alternative. With continued investment and growing public adoption, the dream of a fully connected metropolitan area is firmly on track.
