The Barcelona International Boat Show is setting a new course this year, with organisers announcing a shift in strategy towards exclusivity and global appeal. The event, which runs from 8 to 12 October, will focus less on visitor numbers and more on attracting serious buyers with high purchasing power.

Luis Conde, president of the show, explained that the pause caused by last year’s America’s Cup offered time to rethink the event’s future. “We are now focusing on quality over quantity,” he said, noting that the aim is to attract international clients prepared to invest in major vessels.

This year’s edition will feature nearly 200 exhibitors and around 500 boats, including a floating display of 130 vessels. Notably, large yachts will represent 24% of the offer – double the proportion of previous years. Josep Antoni Llopart, the show’s director, described the change as a “turning point”, designed to capture a more qualified audience.

The exhibition will also expand to include Barcelona’s pier, presenting 56 new models, 26 of which are catamarans. Eight nominees for European Boat of the Year will also be on display. Alongside the commercial showcase, the Port of Barcelona will host more than 30 activities, including discussions and presentations.

Efforts to internationalise the show have already begun, with marketing campaigns launched in France, Italy, Germany, the Netherlands and, for the first time, China.
