Barcelona budget negotiations have reached a critical impasse as the Commons party demands a postponement of Friday’s crucial vote.
Janet Sanz, the party’s leader in Barcelona City Council, confirmed the deadlock in negotiations with Mayor Jaume Collboni’s Socialist party during a radio interview.

The political standoff threatens to derail the city’s financial planning for 2026 unless a last-minute agreement can be reached.
Barcelona Budget Vote Faces Uncertain Future
According to reports from Tot Barcelona, the Commons explicitly requested delaying Friday’s scheduled budget vote. Furthermore, Sanz stated that negotiations with the Socialists haven’t produced concrete results despite ongoing discussions. Consequently, she urged the mayor to reschedule the vote for December, arguing there’s no urgency to proceed with the current proposal.
The municipal government, however, maintains that Friday’s plenary session will proceed as planned. This political confrontation occurs against a backdrop of rising social spending demands in Barcelona, particularly regarding housing and homelessness. Meanwhile, Collboni has secured support from ERC for his budget proposal, but faces opposition from Junts per Barcelona, PP and Vox.
The Commons have progressively increased their demands throughout negotiations. Initially, they sought to permanently ban seasonal rentals in the city, a measure originally announced in autumn 2024. Additionally, they demanded protection for a group of Vallcarca residents facing eviction from properties affected by an urban development plan.
Subsequently, the party added further conditions including prohibiting speculative housing purchases and redirecting €20 million from Barcelona’s international promotion budget toward housing initiatives. They also requested enhanced measures against homelessness, specifically three new specialized centres and 350 apartments for social emergency cases.
The current Barcelona budget crisis reflects broader political tensions within the city’s governance. Therefore, if no agreement emerges before Friday’s vote, Collboni could potentially resort to a confidence vote procedure, similar to his approach in 2024. This ongoing political stalemate ultimately threatens to delay crucial municipal investments and social programmes throughout Barcelona.
