Barcelona’s Canyelles neighbourhood now has a new public lift, improving access in one of the city’s steeper parts of Nou Barris. The lift is on Carrer de Federico García Lorca and links the lower and upper sections of the street.

According to the Ajuntament de Barcelona, the lift covers a vertical distance of 15 metres and is expected to benefit about 2,500 residents nearby. That includes older neighbours and families with young children, for whom the route up and down the hill can be a daily challenge.

The lift runs 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It also has security cameras and emergency call buttons, while the surrounding area has been improved with new urban furniture and better lighting.

Nou Barris councillor Xavier Marcet said the project improves daily life for many neighbours and gives the area a more useful connection. The city says the work was completed ahead of schedule after starting in late 2023.

The project cost about 850,000 euros and was funded by the Ajuntament de Barcelona. It is part of a wider city plan to add more than 30 new lifts and escalators by 2027 in hilly districts such as Nou Barris, Horta-Guinardó and Gràcia.
