Barcelona City Council will invest €11.3 million in a comprehensive rehabilitation of a care home in the Fort Pienc neighbourhood. This significant project addresses the facility’s evident degradation, resulting from years of insufficient maintenance.
The Esther Koplowitz Foundation constructed the building, delivering it to the council in 2003 during Joan Clos’s mayoralty. This essential facility provides 137 residential rooms and 30 day centre places, employing over 100 staff members.
The extensive works will introduce functional improvements, update structural solutions, and replace obsolete or deteriorated installations. Residents and staff will benefit from enhanced living and working conditions.
Key Renovation Works Detailed
Planned improvements include a volumetric expansion to install a new lift, alongside the relocation and redistribution of laundry and kitchen spaces. Additionally, the project will reform the staff changing rooms, which are currently in poor condition.
Workers will completely renovate all bathrooms within the residence. They will install non-slip flooring and cover walls with new ceramic tiles, re-equipping each interior fully.
The project also involves painting and other renewal works in dormitories and common areas. Furthermore, workers will address facade issues, repairing damage caused by ageing, obsolescence, and vandalism.
Enhancing Safety and Infrastructure
The rehabilitation extends to the building’s exterior, replacing waterproofing, thermal insulation, and roof finishes. Workers will also install a new safety railing around the main roof’s perimeter.
The council will significantly improve the residence’s safety by installing a new, modern fire detection system. This upgrade ensures compliance with current technology and regulations.
Workers will place optical-acoustic alarms in all rooms using detectors with alarm bases. This guarantees residents receive the required sound levels specified by current safety standards.
Project Timeline and Investment
The entire project will span an estimated 26 months, with works divided into distinct phases to minimise disruption.
