Mutual Mèdica, the medical mutual society, owns the building at number 31 on Via Laietana, which underwent a 22-month restoration. This project, initiated in May 2023 and completed this year, was officially presented this week. This marks a significant moment for both the city’s architectural preservation and its medical community. Notably, the restoration coincides with a broader transformation of Via Laietana itself, with several high-profile developments underway, including the stalled conversion of the nearby post office headquarters.

A Noucentista Landmark

The Casal del Metge, meaning “House of the Doctor,” was originally designed by renowned architects Adolf Florensa and Enric Catà. They crafted it in the elegant Noucentista style, which defined Catalan culture in the early 20th century. Its original purpose was to unify the city’s dispersed medical institutions under one roof, giving the profession a representative headquarters that reflected its growing institutional importance.

Initially, the building served as the base for the Sindicat de Metges de Catalunya (Doctors’ Union of Catalonia). It remains officially protected as a Cultural Asset of Local Interest (BCIL). The recent 22-month project, covering 6,130 square metres across ten floors, meticulously preserved many unique features. These include original hydraulic floor tiles, interior courtyards that flood the space with natural light, and the building’s distinctive volumetric structure.

Preserving History and Vision

A particularly poignant discovery during the restoration was the building’s armoured chamber. This secure vault protected crucial medical documentation from fascist aerial bombardments during the Spanish Civil War. Today, it stands as a powerful testament to the building’s vital role during a turbulent period in Barcelona’s history.

Mutual Mèdica aims for the restored building to “once again establish itself as a reference point for the medical community and for the city.” This project reflects a wider trend of investment in the city’s architectural heritage, echoing the recent restoration of Gaudí’s original water system in Park Güell.

“This building reflects our mission of putting the doctor at the centre of all decisions and accompanying them throughout their professional career, from the beginning to retirement.”– Dr. Lluís Castells, President of Mutual Mèdica

Dr. Lluís Castells, President of Mutual Mèdica, highlighted the restoration’s symbolic value. He stated, “The Casal del Metge represents the values of our mutual society,” framing the project as a physical embodiment of the organisation’s commitment to the medical profession.

Sandra Cantos, Mutual Médica’s Deputy General Director, noted that the project successfully marries the past and present. She explained, as reported by El Nacional, “In this renovation, we have preserved its emblematic character while adapting it to the challenges of the 21st century.” Cantos further emphasised the goal of “consolidating it as a space for meeting and collaboration.” Given Barcelona’s expanding healthcare sector, evidenced by the recent €161 million high-tech expansion at Hospital Del Mar, the revival of this historic medical hub is especially timely.
