Barcelona City Council will introduce new traffic measures in Poblenou from mid-October, aimed at improving pedestrian safety and reducing vehicle congestion around the Mercat del Poblenou and Marià Aguiló Street.

The changes, described by the council as ‘surgical’, will involve altering the direction of several streets. Among the most affected are Carrer de Joncar, which will now run from the Rambla del Poblenou towards Carrer de Bilbao; Carrer de Ramon Turró, shifting towards the Rambla; and Carrers de la Degollada and dels Castanys, which will be reversed between Plaça de la Unió and Carrer de l’Amistat.

Officials say the move is designed to consolidate the pacification of the market area, discourage drivers from flouting traffic rules and enhance visibility at junctions such as Joncar, which has been flagged as a danger point.
The initiative forms part of Barcelona’s broader push to create safer, more liveable public spaces, particularly in neighbourhoods with dense foot traffic. In recent years, Poblenou has undergone significant urban transformation, and these latest adjustments seek to further prioritise pedestrians over cars.
The council has pledged to monitor the impact of the changes closely and make further refinements if needed, stressing that the ultimate goal is to give residents a calmer, safer environment in which to move about.
