Barcelona Christmas Festival returns to Plaça Catalunya this December with a spectacular programme of 357 performances.
The event, organised by the Barcelona Institute of Culture, will run from 20 to 30 December, transforming the city’s central square into a vibrant hub of theatre, dance, circus, and live music.
Artistic director Sergi Ots explains the festival’s core mission is to build community and emotionally transform audiences.

Consequently, all performances share a common narrative, creating a unique festive dramaturgy. The goal is to showcase Catalan stage creation while opening a window to international production.
Barcelona Christmas Festival Unveils Monumental Installation
A monumental scenography titled ‘Un nou miratge’ by artist Carles Piera will envelop the square. This installation, composed of over 2,000 wooden slats in ascending compositions, aims to create an oniric, vibrant space. “It’s a new way of seeing Christmas,” Piera explains. “Although the scenography is all white, we’ll give it colour with lights to create a more magical, theatrical atmosphere.”
Furthermore, the festival extends beyond the city centre. Performances will also reach districts including Ciutat Vella, Eixample, Sants-Montjuïc, Les Corts, and Gràcia. This decentralised approach ensures wider community access to the festive programme.
Daily activities are structured into four distinct time slots. ‘Matins en família’ offers family-friendly visual theatre. ‘Tardes de circ i dansa’ focuses on street arts with acrobatics and urban dance. Meanwhile, ‘Vespres de música’ presents live concerts across various genres. Finally, ‘Nits espectaculars’ closes each day with major musical and theatrical spectacles.
Diverse Programme Features International Acts
The family mornings feature works like ‘Estacions de Nadal’, a collection of four small-format pieces. Additionally, ‘El planeta Violeta’ by Els Atrapasomnis offers a musical theatre-concert experience. The afternoon circus and dance segment promises energetic performances.
Notably, it includes Maria Solà, known as Mama Calypso, premiering an anti-capitalist carol. Her work emphasises that love and family, not gifts, are Christmas’s true essence. International companies from Belgium and France will also perform, alongside local talents.
The evening music sessions will host artists like Meli Perea and JAZZ MAGNESTISM. Each night concludes spectacularly. Chey Jurado presents ‘Asceta’, and Cor de Teatre from Banyoles premieres ‘Nadal, un viatge inesperat’. This large-scale show features 30 singers and actors, weaving fantasy with classic Christmas references.
