Barcelona City Hall’s nativity scene attracted nearly 2,000 visitors on its opening Saturday, marking a strong start for the festive installation.
According to figures released by the Barcelona City Council, the ‘Pessebre de Sant Jaume’ welcomed 1,945 people through its doors.

This significant turnout suggests the display, now in its second consecutive year under Mayor Jaume Collboni, has captured public interest.
The nativity scene is the largest in the city, covering approximately 70 square metres within the building’s carriage courtyard. Consequently, it nearly triples the size of last year’s installation. Visitors can access it via the main entrance on Plaça de Sant Jaume, where it will remain open until 5 January 2026.

The display draws inspiration from classic Catalan mountain landscapes, particularly the Pyrenees. Furthermore, it blends traditional Christmas elements with distinct features of the local countryside. Mayor Collboni, who anticipated its success, publicly thanked the Association of Nativity Scene Makers for their work in meeting the challenge of creating such a large-scale piece.
The location of the nativity scene inside the City Hall has been a point of discussion. However, the council defends the decision, arguing that the cultural spectacle in Plaça de Sant Jaume remains compatible with the indoor display. Deputy Mayor Raquel Gil cited practical reasons, including protection from weather and potential vandalism, for keeping the traditional ceramic pieces indoors.
Meanwhile, the square outside is hosting a separate golden-hued light show on the facades of both the City Hall and the Generalitat palace. This dual approach allows the city to celebrate tradition while also offering a modern festive experience. The display is part of a broader effort to enhance the city’s cultural offerings during the holiday period, similar to other projects like the recent restoration of historic artworks.
